Twintighuizen 1940
A German Luftwaffe soldier looks directly into the camera as the photographer takes the shot. The photo appears to have been taken shortly after the May days. On the Twintighuizen. This is evident from the houses to the left of the truck, which are still in ruins. The Twintighuizen, located between the Achterhakkers and the Wilgenbosch, was in the combat zone during the events of May 1940. Lieutenant Plasschaert took up position nearby with several soldiers from the Corps Army Maritime Engineers. From the roofs of the Elektromotorenfabriek (EMF) and the Victoria factory, they regularly exchanged fire with German paratroopers who occupied the bridges over the Oude Maas. The houses here on the left fell victim to those battles. Nowadays, there is nothing left to see of that. The Twintighuizen is hardly recognizable since May 1940.
