Noordendijk

The Noordendijk, seen from the Kromhout. On the left, two members of the Air Raid Protection Service (LBD) are walking, wearing helmets and armbands. The Air Raid Protection Service (LBD) was a Dutch organization established in 1939 to protect the population from the effects of air raids. The service was responsible for blackout enforcement, public information, first aid, firefighting, and alerting the population. During the war, the LBD grew into an extensive organization with district and block leaders who maintained local oversight. After the war, the LBD was disbanded and replaced by the Civil Defense Service (Dienst Bescherming Bevolking).
