Billeting of a German officer

A German airforce officer walks out of the front yard of a house on the Krispijnseweg. At that time, the houses were still fully overgrown. Many German soldiers were quartered with the Dordrecht civilian population. This was especially the case with officers. But even for soldiers and non-commissioned officers, there were often not enough sleeping quarters available, so they also had to be quartered with the Dordrecht civilian population. They did not do this themselves. This always happened through the Ortskommandantur. Of course, most Dordrecht citizens were not looking forward to having one or sometimes several quartered German soldiers, but it could have its advantages. For example, some German soldiers occasionally brought food for the household or other products that were difficult to obtain due to rationing. In most cases, both the soldiers and the family made the best of it.
