German soldiers with a Dutch PAG gun on the Vrieseplein in May 1940
As seen in the photo, there was a barricade here with an anti-tank gun behind it.
On May 13, 1940, heavy fighting took place in this sector when German tanks of the 9th Panzer Division broke through after a firefight with the 7-field gun of Wachtmeester Kruithof. The gun was hit by fire from the tanks, after which the tanks broke through to the Bagijnhof and were stopped there by anti-tank fire from Ensign Dekker. The role of this anti-tank gun is not entirely clear. Presumably, it was abandoned prior to the firefight between the German tanks and the 7-field gun of Wachtmeester Kruithof. In any case, it was taken intact by the German troops.
