Pontonniers at the Binnen Kalkhaven

Soliers of the Army Maritime Engineer Corps changing guard during the mobilization period in Dordrecht. The photos were taken at the Korte Kalkhaven and the Binnen Kalkhaven. The photos clearly show how little has changed in this perspective. Many buildings on the Kalkhaven would, however, be completely destroyed in May 1940. These Dutch soldiers are dressed in the prototype uniform. They are armed with a carbine and bayonet. Children from Dordrecht are playing among the soldiers on guard duty who do not seem to be bothered by it. The photos provide an interesting look back in time.
