Corps of Army Maritime Engineers

Dutch soldiers of the Corps of Army Maritime Engineers are marching over the Buiten-Walevest. In the background on the right is the Pontonnierskazerne. The building still exists. The Army Maritime Engineers had access to both the Pontonnierskazerne and the Benthienkazerne on the Buiten-Walevest. The latter has been demolished and replaced by apartments. The Corps of Army Maritime Engineers was garrisoned in Dordrecht. New batches of Pontonniers and Torpedists were trained here. During the mobilization period and the May days of 1940, about 1500 soldiers of the corps were active in Dordrecht. Even after the liberation, the corps remained active in Dordrecht for a long time.
