Sign Werkenmondestraat

A German sign in the Werkenmondenstraat. It reads: Selbständiges Quartiermachen ohne Genehmigung der Ortskommandantur ist verboten. This means that German soldiers were forbidden from arranging billeting on their own initiative. Such matters had to go through the Ortskommandantur, which was the highest German authority in the city. Signs like this were placed in several locations throughout the city. At the bottom right, there is also a small sign indicating the direction to the Ortskommandantur, which was located in Villa Simpang, near the station.
